As parents, we genuinely want to know if our child is doing well at school and what they are learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We want to know how they are settling into their new school routines, what they enjoyed, what challenged them, who they spent time with, and whether anything is worrying them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But often, getting more than a one-word answer can feel impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the first few weeks of school can tell us much more about your child\u2019s wellbeing than a report card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because before the grades appear on a report card, a lot of important learning is already happening beneath the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, in the first month of the school year, here are five things parents should look out for to understand whether their child is settling in and moving in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Is your child settling emotionally?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Starting a new school year can be exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But it can also be stressful for your child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    New teachers. New expectations. New classmates. New routines.
    Sometimes, a new school altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Children don\u2019t always tell us when they are finding things difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A child who says \u201cI\u2019m fine\u201d and shuts down\u00a0may not know how to express their worries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A child who seems unusually quiet may be trying to process a difficult day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      These questions shift the conversation from checking up<\/strong> to helping children think for themselves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It might be a class teacher. A tutor. A pastoral lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A counsellor. A coach. Or another member of the school community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cIf you had a really difficult day at school, who would you go to?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cIs there a teacher who really understands you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWho would you ask if you needed advice about something?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Tips for parents:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If your child immediately has an answer, that\u2019s encouraging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If they struggle to think of someone, it may be worth paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean something is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But it can be a useful prompt for parents to look a little more closely at their child\u2019s relationships and sense of belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Are they taking responsibility for their belongings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Are they solving small problems without immediately coming to you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Are they communicating with teachers when necessary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Are they planning their time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Are they recovering when something goes wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Instead of simply telling your child to \u201cbe more independent\u201d<\/strong>, try questions that help them recognise their own progress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWhat\u2019s something you can manage by yourself now that you couldn\u2019t last year?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWhat was something you had to figure out on your own this week?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWhen something goes wrong at school, what do you usually do?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cWhat would you like to be able to manage on your own by the end of this school year?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Tips for parents:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      These conversations can be surprisingly powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Because independence rarely arrives in one dramatic moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It is built through hundreds of small opportunities to try, struggle, make mistakes, adjust and try again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And sometimes, as parents, our biggest challenge is knowing when to step in \u2014 and when to step back.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Look Beyond the First Report Card<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Of course, academic progress matters. Grades matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      We want our children to learn and achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But a report card tells us about a moment in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It doesn\u2019t always tell us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Can my child manage themselves?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Do they know how to ask for help?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Do they have people they trust?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Can they cope when something doesn\u2019t go according to plan?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Are they becoming more confident and independent?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      These are harder things to measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But over time, they can have just as much influence on a child\u2019s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This is why the first month of school is worth paying attention to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Not because we need to monitor every detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But because early observation gives us the opportunity to understand what a child needs before a small challenge becomes a bigger one.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
